Is Your Website Ready for Black Friday & Christmas?

Black Friday and Christmas are the biggest trading weeks of the year for UK small businesses. Here's a practical checklist to make sure your website can handle them.

Is Your Website Ready for Black Friday & Christmas?

For a lot of small businesses, the six weeks between Black Friday and Christmas Eve bring in more traffic and more sales than any other stretch of the year. If your website isn't ready for it, you're not just missing extra sales — you're sending existing customers to a competitor who loaded faster or checked out easier. Here's what's worth checking now, before the traffic arrives.

Why "ready" matters more in November and December

Visitors are less patient during peak shopping periods. They're comparing you against several other sites in quick succession, often on their phone, often in a hurry. A slow page, a confusing checkout, or a broken link costs you more in December than it does in a quiet week in March — because the visitor has somewhere else to go immediately.

Check your site speed now, not on Black Friday morning

Traffic spikes expose problems that don't show up on a quiet day. If your website is already slow, extra visitors will make it worse. Run a quick speed check (Google PageSpeed Insights is free) and look at:

  • Image sizes — oversized product or banner images are the single biggest cause of slow pages
  • Hosting capacity — cheap shared hosting can struggle under a genuine traffic spike
  • Third-party scripts — chat widgets, review plugins, and tracking pixels all add load time

If you're not sure where your site stands, see our guide on why your website might be slow and how to fix it.

Test the entire buying journey on mobile

Most Black Friday browsing happens on a phone, often while queuing, commuting, or half-watching TV. Go through your own buying journey on your phone, from landing page to confirmation email, and pay attention to:

  • Can you add to basket and checkout without pinching or zooming?
  • Does your payment method actually work (test a real small transaction if you can)?
  • Are delivery costs and dates clear before checkout, not a surprise at the last step?

Update product pages and stock information

Nothing frustrates a shopper more than adding something to their basket only to find it's out of stock at checkout. Before the rush:

  • Update stock levels and remove or clearly mark discontinued products
  • Add delivery cut-off dates for Christmas ("order by 18 December for delivery before Christmas")
  • Make sure pricing, discounts, and sale badges are accurate and consistent across the site

Make sure your site can take the traffic

If you're on Shopify, most of the infrastructure concerns are handled for you — but it's still worth checking your plan and any apps that might slow checkout under load. If you're on a smaller hosting package built for everyday traffic, a sudden spike can genuinely take a site down. See our guide on what web hosting actually costs and what you should pay if you're not sure whether your current hosting is up to it.

Don't forget the basics

  • Analytics tracking — confirm Google Analytics (or whatever you use) is actually recording, so you can see what worked afterwards
  • Contact and returns information — visible and easy to find; shoppers check this before buying from a site they don't already trust
  • A plan for who's watching the site — if something breaks at 9pm on Black Friday, who fixes it?
